CYQ Level 3 Diploma in Teaching Pilates - Course Details

This qualification comprises six mandatory units. Learners are expected to successfully achieve all six mandatory units in order to gain certification.

You will be required to practice teaching and will be expected to complete further study and practice hours in between modules in order to be prepared for each stage of training. You will be expected to record personal practice between weekends and your progress will be assessed through observation and tutorials.

The course comprises:

Module One, Skills, Knowledge and Understanding of Teaching Fitness and Pilates.

Unit 1: Level 3 Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise and Health

This unit covers the knowledge an instructor needs about anatomy and physiology relating to exercise programming for a range of clients. You will gain an understanding of posture and its importance in Pilates.

The knowledge is assessed by a multiple choice, externally set exam.

Unit 2: Health, Safety and Welfare in a Fitness Environment

The aim of this unit is to provide the learner with the knowledge and understanding that instructors need to maintain health, safety and welfare in a variety of fitness environments, including the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults.

The knowledge is assessed by completion of a worksheet: "Health and Safety in a Fitness Environment"

Unit 3: Principles of Exercise, Fitness and Health

This unit covers the knowledge an instructor needs to programme safe and effective exercise for a range of clients, the health benefits of physical activity and the importance of healthy eating.

The knowledge is assessed by completion an externally set theory assessment in the form of a multiple choice theory paper.

Unit 4: Know how to support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity

This unit covers the learner's ability to have the necessary knowledge and skills required to communicate with their clients effectively, and motivate their clients to adhere to an exercise programme. Learners will apply the knowledge and skills they have learned to provide a more client focused approach to their training.

The knowledge is assessed by completion of a worksheet: "Know how to support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity"

Module Two, Teaching Pilates Matwork to Beginners, Advanced and One-to-One

During this module you will learn how to assess what level a client can achieve, how to introduce them to Pilates whatever their age or ability, equipping you for teaching Pilates to clients on a one to one basis including posture analysis, planning and progressing client programmes. You will develop an understanding of the advanced Pilates repertoire and knowledge. You will cover advanced movements and variations and learn to teach classes of mixed level, from beginners to advanced..

Unit 5: Programming a Pilates Teaching Session

This module will equip you with all the skills and knowledge you require to programme a Pilates teaching session of both groups and individuals. You will also learn how to integrate small pieces of equipment into your sessions. You will also look at more challenging levels of the Pilates repertoire and discover progressive programming.

This unit will be internally assessed through observation, case study.

Unit 6: Understand the Fundamentals of Pilates Teaching Sessions

You will look at the development of Joseph Pilates exercises, from the origins, his apprentices, to its introduction to the UK. You will understand the principles of Pilates from the different schools of thought. You will study how the principles are used to help the client improve posture, strength and mobility. You will learn the original matwork repertoire, 34 movements and how to teach them to a diverse clientèle: beginners; intermediates; integrating special populations to your classes, including those with injury issues and those who are pre or post natal.

This unit will be examined through internal assessment on lesson plans, progressive programming and will be observed teaching a class lasting up to an hour.

All course modules will take place in Leeds. Full venue information will be provided on enrolment.

Physiotherapist lectures and practical sessions taught by existing So Pilates instructors will be included in the course so that you gain insight from people working in the industry with question and answer sessions on the work itself.
